NxCetera is the company through which I provide and invoice my services. The impression that NxCetera is more than a one man company was entirely intentional. This is where I come clean, what you get is a bit of Kenn Lamb, well my time anyway.
My goal is to deliver tangible value, to do something that you couldn’t achieve without me. If I don’t have the experience, or if I think that you can do it yourself I’ll tell you. I don’t charge for advice. I charge for my time either to implement that advice myself, or to manage/coach your team to implement that advice.
At the outset I need to understand enough about your business to decide whether I can deliver value. That means a conversation and I don’t mind if it’s over a beer or a double espresso; you can buy the beverage, I’ll contribute my time.
The next step is to define the result that you feel determines that you will have got tangible value from the time that I spend working with you and your company. I’ll assess whether I think I can deliver that result and estimate the time required.
We then get to the cost.
I charge by the day plus travel at £0.40 per
mile plus receipted expenses.
My daily rate is ‘market’ which is
evidence that I have spent enough years in sales to know to price to
value and not to cost.
If you are a sitting in a glass and chrome
city office with a prestigious address and are looking to put together
the M&A advisory team for a $200M deal that has to be concluded by a
week on Thursday, ‘market’ means city rates with a success bonus.
If you are a seed stage start-up looking for help with your business plan and
securing a chunk of funding, then ‘market’ means my working a chunk of
time on a purely contingency basis.
That leaves the simple question of what do I think I’m good at?
I’ve had 10 years running engineering teams, so I understand technology what things cost, how long they take, the people skills and experience that you need and the service companies that can help.
I’ve had 10 years running sales organisations. Direct and distribution sales organisations selling ASICs, components, software, IP and development tools. I’ve managed European, US, Japan and global sales organisations and dismantled and rebuilt two.
I’ve had 10 years running companies. I’ve built early stage businesses, managed multiple rounds of VC finance, secured corporate investments and been through a flotation and the M&A process several times on both the buy and sell side.
